The Prevalence and Predictors of Unmet Medical Needs among the Elderly Living Alone in Korea: An Application of the Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to examine the current status and predicting factors of the unmet needs of the elderly living alone in Korea. For this study, we analysed data from the 2014 National Survey on Older Koreans. Hierarchical logistic
regression analysis was used to examine influencing factors based on the Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations. According to the results of this study, the elderly living alone are vulnerable throughout their entire life course. 25.7% of the
respondents were shown to have unmet medical needs. The factors that predicted unmet medical needs were age, employment status, low education level, involuntary solitary living, low household income, distance to medical centers, low relationship satisfaction with their children, lack of close friends, number of chronic diseases, limitations in daily functions, depression, and nutritional status. These results suggest urgent needs for policies to provide adequate income security, social support mechanisms, and access to necessary health care services to fill the needs of vulnerable elderly living alone.
